2D Character Animator

The SPA Studios are using digital tools to reimagine the charm of classical 2d animation, blended with unique cutting edge digital techniques that adds a fresh volumetric look, lighting and texturing that people have to come to expect in family movies.

Responsibilities

  • Create character animation with convincing motion and performances. Your work will give life to the storylines and characters in the film.
  • Match design references and styles
  • Ensure synchronization of frames and audio
  • Be self-motivated and have the capacity to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Deliver animated footage according to production deadlines and quota schedules
  • Have an appreciation of accuracy and pay close attention to detail ensuring the work moves efficiently through the animation pipeline
  • Collaborate with production crew (designers, directors etc.)

Requirements

  • Proven experience as a character animator
  • Have an excellent understanding of the principles of animation and filmmaking
  • Have acting skills, combined with a good sense of design that matches supervisor direction.

Compositor

The SPA Studios are using digital tools to reimagine the charm of classical 2d animation, blended with unique cutting edge digital techniques that adds a fresh volumetric look, lighting and texturing that people have to come to expect in family movies.

We are structuring the department so artist have an opportunity to set up the shot at the Pre-Comp stage when all the digital elements are coming together, then finish the same shot when is complete in Lighting and ready for the Final Composite. The first pass is more technical, the final pass is the more artistic one.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and set up Nuke scenes with 2d and 3d elements, for a 2d workflow
  • Collaborate with other departments such as Layout, Ink & Paint, Lighting, and Compositing
  • Set up image sizes and formats for the background and layout departments
  • Perform technical work in support of shot lighting and comp
  • Troubleshoot and debug shot problems as they arise
  • Match and integrate 3d elements in a 2d environment
  • Solve contact and perspective issues
  • Prepare 3d projections
  • Set up and animate 2d, multiplane and 3d cameras
  • Pre-comp all the different elements from which shots are going to be created
  • Update shots as new elements and versions get published
  • Lay down a base for the Final Composite to work from
  • Provide other departments with the needed elements meeting their technical requirements
  • Ensure quality of composition of all the provided elements for each assigned shot.
  • Ensure that assigned shots fit in the continuity of a sequence and fulfil the vision of the Directors, Art Directors, and CG Supervisor while meeting the production schedule
  • Color grading and matching of the different elements
  • Apply depth of field, motion blur and other kinds of effects where requested
  • Guarantee color, mood and atmosphere continuity
  • Ensure continuity problems in shots within the sequence are addressed
  • FX integration and creation of 2d comp effects
  • Apply light and shadow 2d effects
  • Ensure that comp setups are clean, documented and easy to understand.
  • Exchange comp elements with other teams or departments

Light & Shadow Artist

The Light and Shadow artist creates the effect of light on top of 2D animated characters using our in-house software. You heard it! KLAUS is the first hand drawn feature animation with volumetric lighting and texture. We are pushing 2D animation to a new level with our state of the art tools using artistic sensibility and innovative software to give volume to the flat nature of hand drawn animation.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Create and shape highlights and shadows on top of the animated character, to represent the light sources in the scene, and to enhance clarity and aesthetic of the frame.
  • Animate these lighting elements with our unique software.
  • Keep the consistency of form and style throughout animated scenes.

Requirements:

  • Basic drawing and understanding of light, and how it affects three dimensional objects.
  • Ability to interpret 2D stylized drawings and to propose their three-dimensional form through lighting.
  • Written and spoken English is a must.
  • No 3D is involved in the process. It doesn’t require any special technical skills. We use in-house software and provide training.

The SPA Studios is looking for a 2D FX Supervisor for our KLAUS movie. KLAUS is a traditionally animated feature production with Netflix.
The job will be held in our studios in Madrid, Spain.

Responsibilities

  • Develop effects look and workflow within the film style.
  • Lead the effects department animators and supervise the quality of the animation.
  • Be self-motivated and have the capacity to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Deliver animated footage according to production deadlines and quota schedules
  • Have an appreciation of accuracy and pay close attention to detail ensuring the work moves efficiently through the animation pipeline
  • Collaborate with production crew (designers, directors etc.)

Requirements

  • Technical and artistic experience in developing appealing 2D animation effects
  • Proven experience in Feature Animation
  • Working knowledge of 2D/3D art techniques and software packages such as Toon Boom is a plus, but training will be provided.

CGI 3D Animator

The SPA Studios is looking for a 3D Animation artist for our KLAUS movie. KLAUS is a traditionally animated feature production with Netflix.
The job will be held in our studios in Madrid, Spain.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with 2d Animation department to animate 3d elements, props and characters, matching 2d animation where needed, and integrate smoothly within the mechanics and layout of the shot
  • Animate 3d environment elements
  • Match-move 3d on 2d animation where needed
  • Provide 3d animation for 2d where needed
  • Solve technical issues
  • Provide other departments with the needed elements meeting their technical requirements

3D Generalist

We are searching for a talented 3D generalist. As the perfect candidate you will have experience creating 3D models, texturing, modeling, 3D FX, and compositing, etc. Someone who can effectively communicate and collaborate with your team, art directors, and production leads at our studio.

  • Work as a 3D generalist to provide 3D elements and 3D animation as needed by production.
  • Be able to adapt and problem solve in a variety of 3D Generalist roles (e.g. Animation, Modeling, FX, Texturing, and Compositing).

3D Surfacing Artist

As a surface artist you will be required to paint textures for the 3d objects and environments, in UV space and projection space, to integrate these elements within the 2d graphic style of the project.

Responsibilities

  • Paint textures that seamlessly integrate with the 2d props and environments
  • Project environment paintings over geometry and fill in gaps and hidden areas mintaining the style
  • Communicate and collaborate with the CG Supervisor, and Modeling and Art teams, to execute the requiredlook
  • Work closely with the modeling team to ensure UVs are positioned efficiently

Requirements

  • Excellent 2d Painting skills
  • 2 years experience with Photoshop and/or The Foundry's Mari in Film projects
  • Previous experience painting textures for film or games and a thorough understanding of the techniques required
  • An understanding of 3d projection and experience using Maya
  • An understanding of image color space relating to texture painting

2D Layout Artist

The SPA Studios are using digital tools to reimagine the charm of classical 2d animation blended, with unique cutting-edge digital techniques that adds a fresh volumetric look, lighting and texturing that people have to come to expect in family movies.

Responsibilities

The Layout Artist works under the supervision of the Layout Supervisor and is responsible for the implementation of assets and cameras in a scene. He creates a cinematic vision based on the storyboard or the 3D previs while preserving the original narrative of the Director. Maintain consistent quality, style and continuity, both visually and technically throughout the sequences

  • Create scenes and shots by placing characters, props and environments according to the storyboard or previs
  • Character blocking, gesture, eyelines and key poses to define their actions and movementsand ensure scale is accurate
  • Define camera angles and animate them, if applicable
  • Adapt shot staging according to the composition
  • Check the conformity and continuity of the sequences
  • Execute the corrections requested by the Supervisor and the Director in a timely manner
  • Organize work and prepare presentation elements for approval
  • Communicate and seek information if necessary
  • Finessing of cameras at animation stage where required

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years Layout / Previs Artist experience in ananimated feature film production environment and or TV animation productions
  • Understanding of the complexity of a 2D / 3D Animation pipeline
  • Have a good eye for image composition (direction) and good knowledge of cameras;
  • Full understanding of perspective drawing, structural drawing and how it is applied to the Animation medium.
  • Excellent knowledge in Photoshop
  • Maya and Toon Boom Harmony would be desirable
  • Working knowledge of Shotgun is a plus

  • Work closely with 2d Layout and Precomp departments to stage shots and camera setup, where 3d elements or movements are involved
  • Setup lenses and perspective to integrate 3d and 2d
  • Import and correctly place in perspective 3d models
  • Plot camera moves and solve technical issues if any
  • Arrange compositions with the 2d and 3d elements ensuring a correct workflow and result
  • Refer to Storyboard and 2d Layout to produce consistent compositions

  • Maintain the consistency in volumes, appeal and “on model” throughout the whole scene.

  • Interpret the rough animation and translate it properly in clean up without losing the animator´s intention
  • Be self-motivated and have the capacity to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Deliver animated footage according to production deadlines and quota schedules

ToonBoom Harmony TD

The SPA Studios is looking for a ToonBoom Harmony TD for our KLAUS movie to support the different departments using ToonBoom’s software, and to help with Harmony pipeline development and implementation. KLAUS is a traditionally animated feature production with Netflix. The job will be held in our studios in Madrid, Spain.

Responsibilities

  • Support to the artists from layout up to ink and paint, acting a primary support for technical problems.
  • Provide technical solutions to artists and supervisors, working closely with the animation crew.
  • Support the artists with both production and tracking tools.
  • Help with the development, maintenance documentation and optimization of production tools.
  • Develop documentation and implement training/mentoring to enhance skillsets of team members.
  • Help with Maya asset integration into Harmony scenes.

Requirements

  • Strong experience in a Toon Boom (Harmony, Storyboard Pro) is a must.
  • Ability to take direction and work collaboratively with a positive attitude.
  • Ability to anticipate hurdles and solve problems.

Checker

We are searching for artists with strong technical skills to be responsible for shot workflow between departments from Story to Final Composite. People who can take care of the technical aspects of the setup, such as assets resolution, camera movements, 3d integration, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and set up shots with 2d and 3d elements, for a 2d workflow
  • Export / Import data from one department to another ensuring all components work according to pipeline specifications and the next department has all the components they need to do their job.
  • Perform technical work in support of keeping the shots flowing between departments
  • Troubleshoot and debug shot problems as they arise
  • Ensure camera continuity between departments
  • Pre-comp when needed the different elements from which shots are going to be created
  • Check the Animation levels out of Harmony from Rough to Ink & Paint to ensure there are no issues with brush lines, closed lines, ensure the mattes and palettes are set up correctly.
