The SPA Studios is currently looking for a Precomp Senior Artist.  Our precomp artists set up the shots, taking care of all the technical aspects of the setup, like asset resolution, camera movements, 3d integration, multiplane and projections.  The role is available immediately and will be based in our studios in Madrid, Spain.

Responsibilities:

  • Lay down a base for the final Compositing department to work from
  • Prepare and set up Nuke scenes with 2d and 3d elements, for a 2d workflow
  • Collaborate with other departments such as Layout, Ink & Paint, Lighting, and Compositing
  • Set up image sizes and formats for the background and layout departments
  • Perform technical work in support of shot lighting and comp
  • Troubleshoot and debug shot problems as they arise
  • Match and integrate 3d elements in a 2d environment
  • Resolve issues with perspective
  • Prepare 3d projections
  • Set up and animate 2d, multiplane and 3d cameras
  • Pre-comp create all the different elements from which shots are going to be created
  • Update shots as new elements and versions get published
  • Provide other departments with the needed elements meeting their technical requirements

 

 

 

Requirements:

  • 2 years experience with Nuke in 2d films
  • Strong technical understanding of Nuke, both in 2d and 3d
  • Experience with ToonBoom Harmony is convenient
  • Possess excellent understanding of composition and perspective
  • Be neat and methodical
  • Understand the 2D animation process, including camera mechanics
  • Understand editing and film structure
  • Have good communication skills
  • Have good team-working skills
  • Be able to deliver on schedule, working calmly and efficiently under pressure

The SPA Studios is currently looking for a 3D Layout Artist.  This role involves working closely with 2d Layout and compositing departments to stage shots and camera setups where 3d elements are involved. Modelling and some animation + set dressing are part of the job.  The role is available immediately will be based in our studios in Madrid, Spain.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with 2d Layout and Pre compositing departments to stage shots and camera setup, where 3d elements or movements are involved
  • Setup lenses and perspective to integrate 3d and 2d
  • Import and correctly place in perspective 3d models
  • Plot camera moves and solve technical issues if any
  • Arrange compositions with the 2d and 3d elements ensuring a correct workflow and result (Refer to Storyboard and 2d Layout to produce consistent compositions)

Requirements:

  • 2 years’ experience with Maya in Layout or Previous work for Film
  • Possess excellent understanding of composition and perspective
  • Neat and methodical

Job Description:

 

The Clean Up Lead is responsible for maintaining the artistic integrity of the Animation. Their focus is on a particular character in the movie. By specialising in certain characters, they are familiar with the design, and animator's style and will form a layer of quality control and providing solid 'key drawings' (easing the burden from the Supervisor and Head of Clean Up).


This person is an experienced Clean Up Assistant, with high level of drawing skills as they are required to finalise Animation to keep it 'on model’ As well as good knowledge of character animation.  The role is available immediately will be based in our studios in Madrid, Spain.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Interpret the rough animation and translate it properly in clean up without losing the animator´s intention
  • Maintaining the consistency in volumes, appeal and “on model” throughout the whole scene.
  • Communicate clearly as a team leader.
  • potting and correcting mistakes in a cleaned-up scene
     

Requirements:

  • Toon Boom knowledge is a plus but not essential
  • Strong drawing skills
  • Understanding of basic traditional animation principles.
  • Team spirit and collaboration with others if needed.
  • English is a must, as the work will be developed in this language

Job Description:

The SPA Studios is currently looking for a 3D Surface Artist.  This role involves painting textures for the 3D objects and environments, in UV space and Projection space, to integrate these elements within the 2D graphic style of the projectThe role is available immediately will be based in our studios in Madrid, Spain.

 

Responsibilities:

* Paint textures that seamlessly integrate with the 2D props and environments

* Project environment paintings over geometry and fill in gaps and hidden areas maintaining the style

* Communicate and collaborate with the CG Supervisor, and Modeling and Art teams, to execute the required look

* Work closely with the modelling team to ensure UVs are positioned efficiently

 

Job Requirements:

* 2D Painting excellent skills

* 2 years experience with Photoshop and/or The Foundry's Mari in Film projects

* Previous experience painting textures for film or games and a thorough understanding of the techniques required

* Understanding of 3D projection and experience using Maya

* Understanding of image color space relating to texture painting

* Ability to apply and manage UV’s in Maya

* Have good team-working skills

* Be able to deliver on schedule, working calmly and efficiently under pressure

The Light and Shadow artist creates the effect of light on top of 2D animated characters using our in-house software. You heard it! KLAUS is the first hand drawn feature animation with volumetric lighting and texture. We are pushing 2D animation to a new level with our state of the art tools using artistic sensibility and innovative software to give volume to the flat nature of hand drawn animation.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Create and shape highlights and shadows on top of the animated character, to represent the light sources in the scene, and to enhance clarity and aesthetic of the frame.
  • Animate these lighting elements with our unique software.
  • Keep the consistency of form and style throughout animated scenes.

 

Requirements:

  • Basic drawing and understanding of light, and how it affects three dimensional objects.
  • Ability to interpret 2D stylized drawings and to propose their three-dimensional form through lighting.
  • Written and spoken English is a must.
  • No 3D is involved in the process. It doesn’t require any special technical skills. We use in-house software and provide training.

3D Generalist Artist

We are searching for a talented 3D generalist.  As the perfect candidate you will have experience creating 3D models, texturing, modeling, 3D FX, and compositing, etc.  Someone who can effectively communicate and collaborate with your team, art directors, and production leads at our studio.

Responsibilities:

Work as a 3D generalist to provide 3D elements and 3D animation as needed by production.  Adapt and problem solve in a variety of 3D Generalist roles (e.g. Animation, Modeling, FX, Texturing, and Compositing).  Deliver high quality work, hit deadlines, work well with others, communicate effectively.

Job requirements:

  • Production experience with creating props, characters, and environments.
  • The ability to create both organic and hard surface 3D models
  • A solid sense of movement and timing as pertaining to animation
  • Possess excellent understanding of composition and perspective
  • Understand the 2D animation process, including camera mechanics would be a big bonus

Responsibilities:

- Ensure quality of composition of all the provided elements for each assigned shot. Ensure that assigned shots fit in the continuity of a sequence and fulfill the vision of the Directors, Art Directors, and CG Supervisor while meeting the production schedule

- Color grading and matching of the different elements

- Apply depth of field, motion blur and other kinds of effects where requested

- Seamlessly integrate 2d and 3d elements

- Guarantee color, mood and atmosphere continuity

- Ensure continuity problems in shots within the sequence are addressed

- Fx integration and creation of 2d comp effects

- Apply light and shadow 2d effects

- Ensure that comp setups are clean, documented and easy to understand.  Pass off a shot to another comper when necessary

- Exchange comp elements with other teams or departments

- May be asked to interview possible new hires for the department

- May be asked to help train new staff

The SPA Studios is currently looking for a traditional 2d FX Senior Animator.  The role involves focusing on the development of the overall look and flow of the Klaus project.  Also, to drive and develop the quality of the animation in an evolutionary form, seeking new techniques and innovating the animation.  The role is available immediately and will be based in our studios in Madrid, Spain.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop effects look and workflow within the film style (see teaser for reference).
  • Contribute to the effects department animators.
  • Working close with team members and supervisors.
  • Ability to interpret and reimagine 2d stylized drawings.
  • Working with deadlines.
  • Ability to produce rough animation and final cleanup lines for ink and paint.

Requirements:

  • Technical and artistic experience in developing appealing 2D animation effects.
  • English is a must, as the work will be developed in this language.

The SPA Studios is currently looking for a Pipeline & Tools Developer for our current production (Klaus).  Experience with Python is essential and an understanding of Toonboom Harmony/Maya and (or) Nuke would be an advantage in understanding the development of tool utilization and progression for Klaus.  The role is available immediately will be based in our studios in Madrid, Spain.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop tools and scripts to exchange graphic elements between various DCC applications
  • Develop utilities to manipulate, collect, and present images, movies, data and presentations
  • Write publishers into our data base
  • Write reusable and testable libraries
  • Identify and suggest various opportunities to improve efficiency and functionality
  • Produce technical specifications and documentation for the tools you develop
  • Solve bugs and provide support to the tools users

Requirements:

  • 2 years’ experience with Python APIs from relevant applications such as Maya and Nuke
  • 2 years’ experience with PySide / Qt
  • Familiarity with Shotgun Python API
  • In-depth knowledge of GIT.
  • Understanding of 2d and 3d image manipulation applications and concepts
  • Excellent time management and multitasking skills
  • Experience working with aggressive deadlines
  • English is a must, as the work will be developed in this language 
  • Ability to relocate and right to work in Madrid is a bonus

Additional Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Javascript is a plus
  • Experience with Thinkbox Deadline is a plus

Sergio Pablos

The guy in charge

His experience in the Animation field has not only been limited to the Original Story or Executive Production of the well-known “Despicable Me” Feature Animation Movie. His career includes credits as Supervising Animator for the following Disney titles: “Tarzan”, “Hunchback of Notre Dame, “Hercules”, and “Treasure Planet”, just to name a few.

Sergio’s work has led him to be nominated twice to the Annie Awards: for his Character Design work on “Rio” (Fox Pictures), and for his Character Animation on “Treasure Planet” (Disney).

Currently, Sergio is focusing on the development of Original Stories and production for Feature Animation Movies.

Marisa Román

Problem-solver

Her professional background started in the Marketing & Communications fields and she has worked not only in Spain but also in Europe and the United States.

In Los Angeles she was employed for several years at the Walt Disney Studios in the Communications Dept., where she acted as a liaison between the Studio’s Animated productions and sixteen other divisions of the Company. She performed these tasks for Productions such as “Hercules”, “Tarzan”, “Mulan” and “A Bug’s Life”.

Back in Spain, she was hired as the Madrid Convention Bureau (Madrid City Hall) as its Head of European Department and since 2004 she has acted as Executive Producer for The SPA Studios, overviewing every project the company has been involved in.

Matthew Teevan

The keeper of order amidst the chaos

Matthew has over 30 years experience in film making, specializing in animation and digital production. Working as an Executive, Producer and Manager he has worked on over a dozen Animated movies as well as DTV Specials, Short Films, TV Series, Game Cinematics and Visual Effects projects.

His first film was ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ before spending 10 years with DreamWorks Animation, working on several movies starting with ‘The Prince of Egypt’.  Then as VP of Production at Starz Animation, his work covered a large spectrum from Animated Feature films (‘9' and ‘Gnomeo & Juliet’) to direct-to-video specials (‘Veggie Tales’ and ‘Yes Virginia’), and home-grown short films.

We are pleased to welcome Matthew expertise and experience in the production of Klaus!
