You may be surprised to find out that the world-renowned franchise Despicable Me, was actually conceived at The SPA Studios, as well as other popular films like Warner's "Smallfoot" or SPA's very own production, the 2020 Best Animated Feature nominee, "Klaus".

Sergio Pablos, founder of The SPA Studios, is a Spanish director, writer and producer. He started his career at the Walt Disney Feature Animation Studios, where among others, he lent his animator skills to such classics as Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules and Tarzan.
In 2004, together with Marisa Román, Pablos founded The SPA Studios (Sergio Pablos Animation) in Madrid, Spain. The company specialized in high-end animation and visual development service work for high-end animated productions.
While directing his company, Sergio developed several original film concepts such as Warner’s Smallfoot and Illumination’s Despicable Me, on which Pablos also served as Executive Producer.
Most recently, Pablos produced, wrote and directed SPA’s first original animated multi-Award-winning film and Netflix’s First Original Animated Feature, Klaus. Sergio himself has also been recognized for various individual achievements, for instance by ASIFA Hollywood with 2 nominations and 2 Annie awards, by Animation Magazine for the 2020 Gamechanger award, among others.
Marisa Román –
Producer & Head of studio
Marisa Román is an Academy Award nominated Producer and Head of The SPA Studios. Román started her career in Animation as part of the Communications Department at Walt Disney Feature Animation in Burbank, CA. Here she contributed to films such as Mulan, A Bug’s Life and Tarzan.
Upon her return to Spain in 2004, she co-founded The SPA Studios with Sergio Pablos. Román oversaw the company’s service operation for 15 years, catering to such clients as Disney, Universal Pictures, Warner Bros., Sony Pictures Animation and Blue Sky Animation.
Marisa also led the studio’s efforts in original content development, which in turn led to the creation of world-famous properties like Universal Pictures’, Despicable Me and Warner Bros., Smallfoot.
Most recently, she has been the Producer of SPA’s first film and Netflix’s first original Animated film, Klaus. The film has garnered critical and audience acclaim, being nominated for best Animated Picture by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science, going on to receive a BAFTA Award, seven Annie Awards and two Quirino Awards. Román was also profiled on 2020 Variety’s International Women’s Impact Report.
